Chapter Nine

“More tests…are you sure…fuck…” The voice sounded as if it were coming in from a pipe or something, or maybe his head was underwater. Either way, he was only catching pieces of the conversation, but the person speaking, the one whose voice permeated the darkness, was a voice he knew so well.

He’d been twenty years old the first time he’d heard that sound, the laughter, the promise to be more than he already was. He’d been a no one from nowhere, some dumb hick whose only chance to make it out of his white trash trailer park was to join the military. Anyone who said the army provided for the rich and poor equally was a damned liar. After two years of training and busting his ass, he’d been given the opportunity of a lifetime. She’d stood in front of a line of five men, each one with a background similar to his, and offered them the solution to all their problems.

“How would you like to be faster? Stronger? Untouchable?”

It had all sounded so seductive, so perfect. Creating the ultimate soldier, a warrior who couldn’t be defeated. Two of the men died with their first injection, but three of them had remained and became stronger with each passing day. They breezed through stress tests, scored phenomenally on feats of skill, dexterity, and cunning. Then it happened. After six months of tests, injections and preparation, they had shifted.

At first, Timbre thought he was going to die. It was a hell unlike anything he’d ever felt before, a hell coming from inside his body and bursting out with every tear of muscle, every breaking bone. He heard each change as it went through his body, felt his face morph into something else, felt the hair grow on his back, the claws extend from the tips of his fingers.

The howl erupting from his throat was an orgasmic sound, the cherry on top of the ice cream sundae he’d just been served, and it was worth every pain he’d gone through to see the world through wolf eyes, to take in the scents around him, to finally be something other than what he was.

His brothers, Jagger and Sawyer, men he’d trained with since the first day of boot camp, transformed and stood next to him, each one a massive wolf, prepared to battle against any army. For two more years, they’d trained, infiltrating the enemy, taking control of operations, becoming everything they’d ever wanted to be. But there was a downfall, of course. While his body had adapted with very few side effects, the other two weren’t so lucky. Jagger went crazy, becoming a berserker who had to be reined in. He’d never left Himani’s headquarters again, needing daily injections to keep his animalistic tendencies under wraps. Sawyer had disappeared and hadn’t been seen again, but Timbre felt the man was alive, still shared the bond with him, which would have disappeared had he died.

He was a wolf all right, but he hadn’t been born a wolf.
